I was a bit disappointed with most of the Dinosaur crochet patterns on Ravelry so thought it was about time I made my own up from scratch!!
"Doidy the Dinosaur" (named after my daughter's nickname which we always used to call her when she was little) is a fun make that I did for the #Drawmoor challenge. While other artists choose to draw the prompt every week, I try to crochet a version of it when I can (the prompt was "A dinosaur enjoying a lovely bubble bath" hence her ducky pal and hot tub!)- so here we are!
Doidy was crocheted using Stylecraft Special Chunky and a 4 / 4.5mm hook.
This pattern uses US terminology.
Head
Row 1: 6 SC in Magic Ring (6)
Row 2: SC Increase all around (12)
Row 3: SC x 1, SC increase x 6 (18)
Row 4: SC x 2, SC increase x 6 (24)
Row 5: SC x 3, SC Increase x 6 (30)
Row 6: SC x 4, SC Increase x 6 (36)
Row 7-10: SC all around (36) (Place safety eyes between rows 8-9 around 6-7 stitches apart)
Row 11: SC x 4, Decrease (30) (Begin stuffing)
Row 12: SC x 3, Decrease (24) (Continue stuffing)
Row 13: SC x 2, Decrease (18)
Row 14: SC x 1, Decrease (12)
Row 15: Decrease all around (6)
Row 16: Top up stuffing until firm (do not overstuff), close up or decrease to finish and tie off.
Muzzle
Row 1: 5 SC in Magic Ring (5)
Row 2: SC increase all around x 5 (10)
Row 3: Back loops only - SC x 1, Increase x 5 (15)
Row 4: SC x 2, Increase x 5 (20)
Row 5-8: SC all around (20)
Row 9: SC x 2, Decrease (15)
Row 10: SC x 1, Decrease (10)
Row 11: Decrease all around (5)
Stuff but leave muzzle end open, and leave long tail of yarn. Sew to the head just below the eyeline (you can optionally add a safety eye / nose to suit or even embroider one if you so wish).
Head fins
Long top fin
Row 1: CH 10 stitches (10)
Row 2: Skip first stitch from hook, then HDC into each stitch (9)
Row 3: On the opposite side of the fin, HDC into each stitch (18)
Row 4-6: SC all around
Once the fin is made, sew to the top center of the head. You can stiffen the fin with PVA or other 'stiffening' methods, as this was for a young child to play with after I'd finished I left the fin soft and just made sure I sewed it on well!
Smaller circular head fin
This attaches just below but in line with the longer top fin
Row 1: 5 SC in magic ring (5)
Row 2: SC Increase all around (10)
Row 3: SC all around. Slip stitch into last stitch and tie off. Sew this circle onto the back of the head just below the dorsal fin.
Eyebrows x 2
I added these just above the safety eyes to give Doidy some expression / character.
Row 1: Ch 6
Row 2: SC in each CH stitch (skip first stitch from hook)
Darn these just above the eyes or glue them on with fabric glue (I always sew stuff I know is going to be for a younger child and make sure they're sewn tightly so they can't chew them off!)
Hopefully your head will look like this (I quite like how the Back Loop Only row gives her a wry smile!) |
Body
Row 1: 6 SC in Magic Ring (6)
Row 2: SC Increase all around (12)
Row 3: SC x 1, SC increase x 6 (18)
Row 4: SC x 2, SC increase x 6 (24)
Row 5: SC x 3, SC Increase x 6 (30)
Row 6: SC x 4, SC Increase x 6 (36)
Row 7: SC x 5, SC Increase x 6 (42)
Row 8: SC x 6, SC Increase x 6 (48)
Row 9 - 14: SC all around (48)
Row 15: SC x 6 Decrease (42) (Begin stuffing)
Row 16: SC x 5, Decrease (36) (Continue stuffing)
Row 17: SC x 4, Decrease (30)
Row 18: SC x 3, Decrease (24)
Row 19: SC x 2, Decrease (18)
Row 20: SC x 1, Decrease (12)
Row 21: Decrease all around (6)
Finish stuffing but don't overstuff. Close up, tie off yarn. Sew head onto body and let's make those arms!!
Arms x 2
Row 1: 4 SC in magic ring (4)
Row 2: Increase all around x 4 (8)
Rows 3-10: SC all around x 8 (8) - Stuff lightly as you go but don't overstuff (like I did! DOH!) You can vary the number of rows to make longer / shorter arms to suit your preference (short arms look quite cool too!)
Once done, SC along the top of each arm to close off, and then sew to the body just below the head / neckline
Legs / Feet x 2
These are identical to the middle, including the back loops only row as it gives them the appearance of feet / paws a bit more than just straight SC but again it's up to you if you want to include the back loops only row or not (you could just do both loops if you like blobbier feet!)
Row 1: 5 SC in Magic Ring (5)
Row 2: SC increase all around x 5 (10)
Row 3: Back loops only - SC x 1, Increase x 5 (15)
Row 4: SC x 2, Increase x 5 (20)
Row 5-8: SC all around (20)
Row 9: SC x 2, Decrease (15)
Row 10: SC x 1, Decrease (10)
Row 11: Decrease all around (5)
Stuff well but don't overstuff. Close up gap as you did with the arms, and then sew to the underside of the body.
Almost there! Now for the tail!
Tail (Stuff as you go with this one as it's quite long and tube like and can be difficult to stuff last thing!)
Row 1: 6 SC in Magic Ring (6)
Row 2: SC Increase all around (12)
Row 3: SC x 1, SC increase x 6 (18)
Row 4: SC x 2, SC increase x 6 (24)
Row 5: SC x 3, SC Increase x 6 (30)
Row 6: SC x 4, SC Increase x 6 (36)
Row 7-10: SC all around (36)
Row 11: SC x 4, Decrease x 6(30)
Row 12-13: SC all around (30)
Row 14: SC x 3, Decrease x 6 (24)
Row 15-16: SC all around (24)
Row 17: SC x 2, Decrease x 6 (18)
Row 18-19: SC all around (18)
Row 20: SC x 1, decrease x 6 (12)
Row 21: SC all around (12)
Row 22: Decrease all around (6)
Row 23: SC all around (6)
Top up the stuffing, close off the end to a point and sew underneath your dinosaur's bum just next to the legs)
Additional fins
I added 3 small circular fins on the tail and two larger ones on the back. These are just magic rings so pretty easy to make.
For the three smaller ones (for the tail)
Row 1: 4 SC in magic circle (4)
Row 2: SC all around (4)
For the two larger ones (for the back)
Row 1: 6 SC in magic ring (6)
Row 2: Increase all around (12)
Sew these into place on tail / back and your Doidy the Dinosaur is finished!! Cute huh?
Please leave comments / corrections or suggestions below and if you have photos of your finished Doidy, please do post 'em on Ravelry, I'd love to see them!!
